October baseball is officially coming back to Cleveland.
The Cleveland Guardians clinched a spot in the 2026 MLB postseason Thursday night, defeating the Boston Red Sox 1–0 at Fenway Park.
The victory sends Cleveland to the playoffs for the third consecutive season and guarantees the Guardians at least an American League Wild Card berth.
One swing provided all the offense Cleveland needed.
One Swing Was All Cleveland Needed
Angel Martínez launched a solo home run in the second inning, his 18th homer of the season, giving the Guardians a 1–0 advantage that their pitching staff never surrendered.
Cleveland’s Pitching Staff Slams the Door
Joey Cantillo delivered five scoreless innings in relief of opener Daniel Espino, allowing only one hit while striking out four. Hunter Gaddis and Erik Sabrowski helped carry the shutout into the ninth.
Then closer Cade Smith finished it.
Smith struck out all three batters he faced in the ninth inning to secure his 41st save of the season — and Cleveland’s ticket to October.
What the Win Meant for the Guardians
But the regular-season race isn’t finished.
The Guardians enter the final three games with an 83–76 record and a one-game lead over the Chicago White Sox in the AL Central. Cleveland now heads to Kansas City for its final series of the regular season.
A division championship — and potentially a first-round postseason bye — is still on the line.
But one thing is already certain.
The Cleveland Guardians are going back to the playoffs.
Update: Cleveland Went on to Win the AL Central
After this article was originally published, Cleveland finished the job. The Guardians won the 2026 American League Central, finished the regular season 85–77 and secured the No. 2 seed in the American League, earning a first-round postseason bye.
